Ode to the Days Where Being Sticky Was Fun and We Didn’t Worry About Messes!

Do these Pictures bring back fun childhood memories for you?  They sure do for me!  That container of Elmer’s Paste takes me right back to Elementary school craft projects in the classroom.  The glue sticks remind of back to school shopping with Mom, as it was typical for her to by us each one.  Who remembers Mucilage?  What the heck kind of name is that for a glue anyway ? :).  I used to think mucilage must have something to do with mucus when I was a child (ew), but I enjoyed applying it to things with that rubber tip it comes with.

Why on earth is she talking about glue you ask?!  Because the secret word of the day is GLUE !  I have created a silly, fun, childhood nostalgia type poem to make you smile today!  Be forewarned that the point of five minute Friday is to write non stop without thinking much and without worry of perfect grammar.  Here was my 5 minutes!

Go

“Ode to the Days Where Being Sticky was Fun and We Didn’t Worry About Messes!”

There were crayons and colors everywhere-

Sometimes the markers stained the chair!

Sometimes my paints got in my hair.

These were the days I didn’t care.

These were the days of mess and fun,

And long afternoons spent in the sun.

Lemonade stands and climbing trees,

Doing whatever my Joyous heart pleased.

Capture the Flag , Hide N Seek, Tag,

Eating lunches out of a brown paper bag.

No clocks, No worries, My Spirit Free-

These were the days when I was ME.

Daisy chains, and Puff Painted Shoes,

Huffy Bikes and trips to zoos.

Lightning Bugs I caught in Jars,

That lit my room like little stars.

Mud pies, Mud puddles, No Aversion to Dirt,

Wearin’ my Brownie Girl Scout’s Shirt.

Making Paper Hearts and Snowflakes too-

Construction Paper, Paste and Glue!!

Sequins and Glitter and Sparkle Galore-

Always time to create.  Always time for more!

Play-Doh sculptures and Barbie Dolls,

Finger Paints and Writing on Walls.

Side Walk Chalked Hands, Popsicle stained lips,

Disney World and Peter Pan Ships!

Everything was possible, Was there ever any doubt?

What I didn’t know, I was bound to figure out!

There was a Freedom in These Sticky Mess Days-

For true Joy Belongs to those who Play.

All grown up now, I must confess-

Some days I long for the sticky mess.

No matter our age we can still have these things-

We can Sprinkle our days with imperfect things.

We can get a little messy and sticky too,

There’s no need to be afraid of a little glue ;).

So come play, relax, and ditch your clocks!

Take off your shoes and take off your socks!

Tell Mr. (or Miss) Perfection to take a hike-

Today my friends, you are travelling light!

If you need me I’ll be in the Tree House Fort-

Call my tin can phone if you need support 😀 .

The End (because all good stories ended with The End when we were small).

I am hopping over from Lisa Jo Baker’s link up! I live in messes with our boys (ages 4 and 7 yrs). We love to get messy! So my childhood continues. I live with them, for them, and get so sticky. As a kid I remember a lot of what your poem entailed…my favorite moments were playing in our neighborhood, riding bikes, roller skating, and shopping with my mom (thankfully I get to still do that too)!

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

That is the part of parenthood that would be such fun Jennifer-getting to relive our own childhoods! I hope to have a child to do that with someday myself :). Riding bikes, roller skating and shopping with Mom were favorites of mine as well! Thanks for sharing your memories! I had fun reading them.

  2. Janet says:

Fun! I’m a little old for the puff-painted shoes, but I remember doing just about everything else (actually, I puff-painted several ‘outfits’ for my daughter when she was young, poor thing…) This is my favorite – “No clocks, No worries, My Spirit Free-
These were the days when I was ME.

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Hi Janet! My Grandma loved puff painting outfits for My mom and I (namely puff painted sweatsuits with themes according to the time of year..such as Valentine’s, Fall leaves, and Christmas-haha). I have many photos of me wearing these with the added rhinestone bling Grandma loved to tack on. It’s funny looking back on those outfits, but hey-they make memories for the wearer :). Thanks for sharing your favorite line from my poem-it is always neat to get feedback. Have a wonderful Spring!

  3. Claire says:

So cute. As a Kindergarten teacher, I get messy on a daily basis! Rarely is there a day that I don’t come home with marker on my hands, or glue on my clothing. Thanks for sharing!

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Thanks for stopping by Claire! I used to want to be an elementary school teacher , as I love doing crafts with kids. It’s a fun way to “play” as an adult, although I know being a teacher is a tough job too. I have so much respect for teachers because of the time vested in the lives of these little ones.

  4. This is such a great, fun poem today. I love what you did this FMF prompt! You have skills girl! 😀 Have a Blessed Easter weekend, Meredith

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Thank you Meredith! I am glad you enjoyed it and your comment was very kind! I try to write a poem each week with the word, just because I have a goal of writing poetry more regularly as an adult (something I did all throughout my school years and left behind for awhile there). I did have a blessed (tech free) Easter, (hence the short delay on getting back to you). I hope you had a great one as well.

  5. Mud! That was my favourite mess, especially right after a bath and just before heading out with the family. Scraps of paper, bits of cloth, glue and imagination – oh, so many memories come back with this post. Thanks, Bekah!

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Hi Cathryn! Thanks for stopping by to share a memory! I am sure your parents loved that you enjoyed mud right after baths or before going out ;). I am glad you found memories in this to delight you <3.

  6. Cindy says:

Love your cute post 🙂 Such a fun take for a FMF post. I remember as a kid wandering to the back of our country property where the previous owners used to bury their trash. Yes, this place was so rural that the previous owners did not have garbage service. My sister and I would play for hours digging up old cans, broken old toys and setting up a play “store” in the woods. It was certainly messy but we treated it as though we were on a treasure hunt of epic proportions to find goodies for our store. Thank you for your clever post and for prompting such fun memories.
    Blessings!
    Cindy

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Hi Cindy! Thank you for stopping by to share your childhood memories! I just love hearing what others did too, as it is such a fun time in life. What a unique memory you share with setting up a store in the woods! I do remember how much I enjoyed that feeling of find treasures as a child , but we didn’t have anything like that near our home. I did have a friend that would take me with butterfly nets exploring through the woods to try to catch butterflies or bugs. I still find myself “exploring” things these days, mostly flowers lately. :).

You are so welcome and thank YOU for your sweet comments.

  7. Cathy says:

Rebekah, Awesome trip down memory lane! This was a fun post and so creative. I loved playing house with a sheet draped over the dining room table or tying a rope to my dogs collar and attaching it to my bike and pretending he was my horse! Dropping by from FMF. Visit my Facebook page at Life Bubbling Over for some encouragement! Have a blessed Easter! ( Adorable Blog…so happy!)

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Hi Cathy! I am so glad you enjoyed it! It was fun to write. Thanks for sharing your memories. I love reading what others did when they were small too! We did something similar with our Chocolate lab growing up. We used a rope to hook him up to an inflatable sled , thinking he could pull us around like a horse or sled dog. It didn’t work though. He took off running when we threw the tennis ball and yanked the sled handle clean off..causing the sled to deflate on the spot. Ha! I did “like” your FB page a couple days ago, after reading this. If you would like to keep up with the inspirational stuff I do here, My FB page is: https://www.facebook.com/WeLiveInspired

I had a great Easter and hope you did as well. Such gorgeous weather here and lots of flowers out! Thank you for the kind comment on my blog-happy is one of the adjectives I was going for when I created it, so I am glad that translates across the pages :). Pleasure connecting with you here.

  8. Emma French says:

I love this Rebekah! I used to get up to lots of fun and naughty things as a kid. With my fascination for insects I would collect all types. Once when my mother told me to put back the elephant beetle I had found, I put a stripe of red lipstick on its back so I could find it again – they are slow-moving, so this was a great success, and I apparently managed to persuade a teacher at school I had discovered a new species!
I remember also once when I was bored decorating the garage with toilet paper, stuck onto the walls with toothpaste – many years later the bright white dobs were still speckled all over the grey garage plaster…
And I still like making sticky fun when I cook and concoct stuff in the kitchen as an adult! xxxox

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

Delightful Emma! You had me laughing out loud at your childhood antics :D. How clever to mark the bug with lipstick for later haha.., I can’t believe your teacher actually thought it could be a new species!! The white dobs on the garage LOL! You just made me remember something naughty my cousin got us involved in when we were children. He gave us each a ski pole and started poking holes in the basement ceiling at my aunt’s house. The holes were still there years later as well. Playing with food is an enjoyable past time for me too! :D. XOXO <3

  9. Lizzy says:

Lizzy to Bekah on the tin can phone! (only I think I recall ours were the fancy loo roll version)… so much fun and so many memories here. And smiles, lots of smiles 😀

    • Rebekah (We Live Inspired) says:

HAHA! Love it! I hear you loud and clear…which is pretty amazing considering how far away you live ;). I am glad this made you smile. Please feel free to call my tin can phone anytime :D. Love and blessings ~Bekah
